Jailbreaking your iPhone

iPhone No Comments »

Jailbreaking and unlocking are terms that are bandied around the iPhone community. People don’t always take the time to explain what they are or why they are valuable to users, so we thought we’d sit down and explain why they are still beneficial to the community at large.

Jailbreak

“Jail” refers to file system limitations put in place by Apple on standard iPhones. These limitations restrict iPhone read and write access to just a small part of the media partition. You cannot access system files at all and you cannot use the disk directly as you would with an iPod with disk mode enabled.

“Jailbreaking” opens the entire iPhone file system for use. Once jailbroken, you can read and write to system files as well as media files. You’ll be able to use SFTP, AFP, and other standard file access protocols to read and write data. For example, you can use a client like Cyberduck to move data onto and off from the iPhone.

Jailbreaking also allows you to install third-party software (typically via Cydia) without using App Store and to access the Unix command line via OpenSSH. This lets you install software that otherwise cannot be obtained through App Store such as MMS clients, video recorders, and more.

Unlocking

As for unlocking, most phones (here in the US, anyway) are “locked” to a particular network. In the iPhone’s case, that’s AT&T for the US, O2 for Great Britain, and so on. Should you want to use your iPhone with another GSM carrier, you need to unlock.

Unlocking lets you place calls with any GSM carrier by inserting different Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) into the phone. Normally these SIMs from unapproved carriers won’t work. When your iPhone is unlocked, just buy a local GSM-compatible SIM, place it in your phone, and make your calls. You’ll be able to use your iPhone around the globe without paying exorbitant roaming fees.

The iPhone re-wrote the book on mobile phones and many of the newer phones coming on the market are attempting to copy or better Apple’s design.

But possibly one of the best features of the iPhone is the frankly incredible range of accessories being made by just about every manufacturer on the planet. Every one wants a piece of the iPhone. Cases are a case in point (sic). But which case is right for you, and more importantly, which case will do the best job of protecting your shiny new iPhone while maintaining it’s usability and looks? Here are the five best iPhone cases, ranked by the Knowles destructotest™ method.

iPhone Multitasking - Something to look for in the much speculated iPhone revision ~ June

iPhone No Comments »

iPhone Apps are great, but it would be awesome if its able to handle multitasking ! Like, taking singing while bathing. Rockstar huh! Hate it when my songs shutdown automatically when a new application is invoked. Anyway, Apple is believed to have a shift in strategy which could possibly be seen with the much rumored June release of iPhone’s hardware revision. Friends from Appleinsider believe that radio, VOIP and other 3rd party apps may also be supported. The 1st gen and 3g iPhone cannot handle multitasking and the New ARM processor would have been developed for this purpose (Would require additional memory too)

But all these kick-ass features would not be ‘gratis‘. Apple as usual loads its patrons with some heavy $bills. Hope they stay upto what Apple is usually known for! (Not another MobileMe Parody)

Find a Job

iPhone No Comments »

So, you’ve got your iPhone but you just lost your job? Or you’re looking to move to where the opportunities are in this contracting market? Job Compass could be the app for you.

Not yet available on the AppStore, but with the final version of the app having been submitted to Apple, this $3.99 offering from Securicy Ventures will leverage the iPhone’s location-aware capabilities and seamless integration between maps, web and email.

Job Compass’ protocols are patent pending, according to Securicy spokesman Titus Blair, who told Cult of Mac, “we have over 2+ million listings with more added daily. You can email the listing to yourself inside the app (without leaving) as well as apply online if you want.” Blair added that future releases will offer driving directions and other cool job hunting tools to help refine the search and locate relevant jobs.

It’s said in a declining economy, smart people go where the opportunities are. Job Compass might be just the thing to help you find one right around the corner.
